Retribution, Repentance & Reconciliation :
A man walks on through life with the ‘ external call ringing in his ears’ but with no response stirring in his heart. Suddenly, without any warning, the ‘ Spirit’ taps him on the shoulder. What happens next ? Does he ‘ turn around’? The word Repentance means, ‘ He turns around’. Did VW ?
Defense of insanity compounds the error. In case of VW, it’s _like a drunkard who in the morning repents the headache, and not the drink_….in this case I’m not too sure if he even repents the headache ?
In some there is repentance of a misdeed which produces a ‘ sense of shame’. Was there any in his case ? Having committed the misdeed, was there any moral reflection? If there was none then please remember, ‘ the dog will return to his vomit’.
In the case of VW, he has been a regular repeat offender ever since he surfaced on BambooDoor. The stage reached by him is such that ‘ even his tears of repentance will need some washing’ because they will sound like the wailings of a condemned creature who cannot give a single reason why he should not be condemned.
Let me give you an example which captures the situation well. Neither driving on the left side of the road nor the right side of the road is immoral. Either could easily be chosen as the rule of the road, as has been done. Both, however, cannot be chosen without disastrous consequences. Now comes the crux. Refraining from an authoritative decisive choice would surely be catastrophic. After having decided that one has to drive on the left side of the road, one has to penalise someone who continues to drive on the right side of the road. An important conclusion from these premises is that justice requires individuals to accept the pattern of liberty and restraint one has to exercise in a group or the society one inhabits. The central, therefore, is not that he causes harm to a specific individual, but that he unfairly usurps liberty to pursue his own interests and plans in a manner contrary to the common boundaries delineated by the group and is equally unfair to everyone else, in that he tries to gain an undue advantage over those who remain inside the required pattern of restraint. Says he mockingly, ‘ I am responsible only for what I say. I am not responsible for what you understand’. I’m sure you all have got what I’m trying to convey.
When repentance is non-existent, retribution is the only answer. Retribution is not Lex talionis or about revenge. It only aims to correct the errant behavior to accepted tolerable limits within a group.
As of now, Ex-communicating VW from Bamboodoor is a retributive necessity as a precursor to reconciliation if realisation dawns on VW. There is no need for anyone to reach out to him. Let the onus, if interested, be on him to reach out to ‘his so called 15 well-wishers’ who he claims complimented him after that Tragic Comedy of Compounded Errors which unfolded in the portals of Mulla.
Lastly, as Guru Gobind Singh Ji said, ‘ Jai Zulm Karna Paap hai, teh Zulm Sehna wi Paap Hai…’. My take. 🤔⚔
